Be Mine | Tags for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day Gifts

**This is a post from last year that was so popular, I had a new version of the Be Mine cards printed and are available for sale in my store!

....

I love homemade gifts for holidays like Valentine's Day - when it is more about the love and effort than the money spent.  I try to make my homemade treats look as beautiful as possible - this Folded Be Mine Card is one of my favorites.

Here, I've attached the folded card to a cellophane bag with sugar cookies and tied it with Baker's twine.

You'll need :

-Medium or Small Cello Bag
-Baker's Twine, $16
-Be Mine Folded Label, $12
-Disposable Pastry Bags
-Gel Food Colors

Here, I've cut out the smaller "Be Mine" labels into tags by snipping the corners and using a small hole punch.

Baked Glazed Donuts & Cinnamon Sugar Donuts | The Barefoot Contessa Project

I can not follow a recipe.  No matter how hard I try, I can not help but to alter it in some way or another...  So, even though this series is supposed to be about The Barefoot Contessa's new book, Foolproof, again I have taken her recipe and done my own version of it.  Ugh.  Sorry.  BUT, these glazed donuts were sooo good.  I guess I'm not that sorry.

Read more about my Month with The Barefoot Contessa Project, here.

I love glazed donuts.

Mike loves cinnamon sugar donuts.

So, I made both.

I used a Baked Donut Pan ($10, available in my store).

I started with Ina's recipe for Cinnamon Baked Donuts.  Because I new I would be doing both glazed and cinnamon/sugar, I left out the cinnamon and nutmeg in the batter.  I did everything else.  Exactly.

I have to say - they are good!  I'm not sure which I like better.  I made cinnamon sugar for dessert last night and then the glazed for breakfast.

The batter takes no time to put together - it is about like pancake batter - and bakes for 17 minutes.  So, by the time they come out of the oven, you have time to wash the mixing bowl and put together either the glaze or cinnamon and sugar.  It is definitely something I'll do for guests in the future - dessert or breakfast.

The batter ready for the oven.  See how messy I am?

Done - the outside is golden and the inside is so moist... almost creamy.

Cinnamon Sugar (for dessert last night).  After you bake them, they get dunked in butter, then cinnamon sugar.  I think the butter really makes them extra delicious.  Obviously.

Then, this morning's batch - dunked in a simple milk, melted butter and powdered sugar glaze.

Valentine's Day Inspiration Guide - Recipes, Cookies, Homemade Gifts & Printable Labels

This weekend, I'm working on a new round of Valentine's Day projects - cookies, homemade goodies, baked gifts, simple flowers, etc.  For inspiration, I started looking back at my past Valentine's Day posts.  I thought I would share a roundup of my past projects to inspire you this year... and me.

I've posted an index of all of the photos and links on my "Valentine's Day Guide" page.  I'll be updating the page with my new projects and recipes as I add them to the blog.

A Barefoot Contessa Dinner Party... with tiny photos

Last weekend, before I accidentally erased all of the photos from my computer, we hosted some friends for dinner and the entire menu was from Foolproof.  If you're new to the party, you can read all about my Barefoot Contessa project, here.

I dutifully photographed every step in the preparation of dinner... and then deleted all of the photos from my computer (have I mentioned that?).  I do, however, still have small versions of my photos - just not the big pretty ones.  Even though these are not big and beautiful, I still wanted to share the party with you and our menu.

I planted African Violets in my latte cups (Sur La Table, $6... deal!) that I used as a simple centerpiece.

With wine before dinner, I served my version of Tuscan Mashed Chickpeas with Crusty Bread.  After reading Ina's recipe, I realized it sounded a lot like a favorite starter at one of my favorite restaurants, Lidia's.  Lidia Bastianich, who is co-owner of Eatly in NYC with Mario Batali, also owns a fabulous authentic Italian restaurant in KC.  So, I modified the recipe to exclude the tomatoes and added basil instead.  It was so tasty and definitely reminded me of dining at Lidia's.

Cooking the onions...

Crumbling in the gorgonzola.

The sauce was so delicious!  I'm not a huge fan of gorgonzola, but I love Ina's Gorgonzola Cream sauce for Beef Tenderloin, so I trusted that it would be just as good.  It definitely was - I think cooking the gorgonzola mellows its strong flavor.

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find authentic Tagliatelle, but I went to our local Italian grocery, Bella Napoli, and settled for this pasta that I thought looked like it would work - flat, thin pasta.

When I got home, I realized that it actually was Tagliatelle - and it was perfect.  It was better than linguine or fettucine, because it was so thin and delicate, while being a long flat noodle.

Dinner is served.  One of our favorite dinners!  My friends, Leah and Geoff, are huge fans of Pasta Carbonara - they loved this pasta.

We ended the night with the Sticky Toffee Date Cake.  Mike and I had had a warm toffee pudding in Vail last month that we loved and this was just as delicious - it was so, so moist and dense... and light at the same time.

My Linen "Closets" | Creative Linen Storage in Our Small House

I'm not doing this to be annoying.  I promise.  So, I'll spare you the Martha-esque rambling about the joys of living with linens organized as such...

I'm merely making an effort to make every corner and crevice in our small little house work very, very hard.  Also, as we were driving home from Christmas,  I realized, we have a lot of nice things.  Sometimes, I think our lovelies get shadowed by the other not-so-special things that we accumulate.  So, I'm in clean out and clean up mode (similar to shape-up or ship-out...).

Here are the rules :

If I love it, it stays.
If we need it, it stays.
If I would ever need to repurchase it, it stays.
If for some reason (however irrational) I don't get a good vibe from it, I've never liked it, but it was a gift, I get no joy from it, it was on sale so I just bought it but don't really like it... it goes.

So, I started with my linens.  This pie safe (formerly in Emma's nursery, but now that she's mobile it would be too tempting for her to practice her climbing skills) now stands in our guest room.

We don't have very much usable storage in our little house- only one small linen closet in the hallway, hardly any storage in the kitchen and none in the dining room.  So, using this cabinet works great for storing everything from table linens to wool blankets.

You probably recognize these Libeco linen tea towels - They are the stars of most of my food shoots.

I also am keeping our out of season candles in this cabinet - they perfume the linens nicely.  All the way to the right, you can see my stack of hand-painted linen towels I made in the Spring.

This is a stack of out of season pillow cases and on top is a vintage European duvet cover that will be Emma's.  I bought it last year in Brimfield, Ma. at the famous antique show.

Stacks of sheets and wool and cashmere throws.

Opposite of the guest bedroom is the small hall closet that holds the rest of our "stuff."

Everyone has their own basket (even Mr. Darcy) that has all of their junk in it.  Baskets are always a great way to make you feel organized... it always looks pretty, but really just divides the mess.  To make you feel better, at the end of this post, I've included a photo of what my basket looks like inside - everything is just thrown in there!

I got these "Threshold Rattan Small Milk Crate Baskets" at Target.  They sell the baskets without the liner ($25 for 2) online, but with the liner ($15 each) in store.

Stacks of white towels, Mason Jars of cotton balls and Qtips.

Next, I've stacked our out of season duvet covers in a basket - I know, it might seem like a little much to have the basket in there, too, but I already owned it and these little touches of 'styling' our own home make even the insides of the closets pretty.

Paper towels and pillows... not much to say about those.

I've included photos of what hides behind our baskets, too, so you can see we're actually human. I have no idea what is in those boxes... they were packed like that when we moved.

And, as promised, the inside of "my basket" - messy and organized at the same time.
