A Little Note to My Friends & Their Photos

 Tessa at Nine and Sixteen

I wanted to give some love to some of my favorite Bloggers & Instagrammers that have given me some love over the last couple of weeks.  I find it becoming increasingly hard to come by fresh inspiration. These ladies are some of the best sources that provide little snippets into their lives and home - and I swoon every time.

Tessa's impact on my style is no secret!  She is so good at the mix and match and play of textiles, antiques and all things cozy.  Her feed is constantly influencing my store collections and home.

Above she puts a table together with my Blue Hydrangea Napkins.

Her Baked Chocolate Donuts with Vanilla Glaze - yum - pictured with my Privet Sprig Tea Towel (sold out, but napkins and table runners are available).

Almost all of you know Patsy.  She is as good as it gets!  I'm constantly awed by her spirit and her words, and her home full of country house style.

She has an assortment of my block print pillows in rotation on her sofa and in her mudroom.

She used my Cream Hydrangea Napkins & Runner to set a table for her guests.  I love how she fills her giant farmhouse table with candles, Willow Vases ($34), and little pewter pieces.

Allison at The Clever Goose

Allison is using my Aged Bread Boards in her beautiful streamlined kitchen.  I love all of the details in this room and all of her accents are spot on.

Emiy has such gracious style.  Her home (and her chickens) make me want to move someplace by a big pond in the country!  Here she has my Blue Hydrangea 20" Square pillow on her wing chair.

Anyone's feed called the Dutch Door has my heart.  I love how she used my Privet Sprig Runner $36 mixed and matched with layered china.

Kirby at 15009 Farmhouse

Kirby is a personal friend (and 2nd cousin!) of mine.  She lives in the town I grew up in and I love to live vicariously through her in her gorgeous new farmhouse.  She has my 8x10" Gold Frames & 5x7" Botanicals hanging in her bathroom.  Look at that tub, floor and deep window sill!

This is the sort of thing that I never had time for before - I was too swamped with never enough energy.  It feels great to be able to carve out some time and appreciate the work of these ladies.  Thank you all for your inspiration and work.  You inspire me.

Easy & Creamy Lemon Pie

Easy & Creamy Lemon Pie

During my catering days, being able to make a fabulous (and stunning…) dessert in just a couple of minutes (for just a couple of dollars…) was essential to survival. This Easy & Creamy Lemon Pie was often on the menu, especially during the spring and summer months. It is sweet, tart, creamy and refreshing all at the same time. Besides being, delicious – it is unbelievably easy with very few ingredients. I’ve made it in regular pie dishes, or in cupcake pans for mini tarts. I’ve even traded the lemon juice for key lime juice… always a big hit!

10 graham crackers (2 cups of crumbs)

5 tablespoons of butter
1/4 cup of sugar
….
2 cans of sweetened condensed milk
1 cup of lemon juice
6 egg yolks
2 cups of whipping cream
1/4 cup of sugar
lemon zest
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
For the crust, crumble graham crackers into crumbs by processing them in a food processor.  If you don’t have a food processor, you can smash them in a plastic bag.  Meanwhile, melt the butter in a pie dish in the microwave.  Add graham crackers to the butter and add sugar.  Mix mixture together with a fork.  Press the crumb mixture into the sides and bottom of the pan.  A measuring cup can make it easier.  Bake the crust for 8 minutes.

For filling, mix together sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice and egg yolks until smooth.  Pour filling into crust.  Bake for 20 minutes.  Let cool.  When cool, topped with sweetened whipped cream.

To make whipped cream, in a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, add cold cream and sugar then whip until peaks form.  Top pie with whipped cream and lemon zest, and refrigerate.

Harvest Heirloom Pumpkin Table Setting

Fall is my favorite time of the year to entertain — the chapter has closed on summer grilling parties and the pressures of large holiday family gatherings are not yet upon us. It is the perfect time of year to invite a small group of friends over for an intimate dinner that celebrates nothing but the season of bounty.

The only rule? You must pull inspiration from the harvest season. Put all of those majestic squash and pumpkins at the farmers’ market to work, using them as the centerpiece of your table and your menu.

Harvest Party Table Setting
Set the Stage with Natural Elements

Setting the table is your chance to set the scene and mood for your party. I wanted my dinner to be special, but relaxed and casual, as well. It features beautiful seasonal produce in its natural form with little alteration — allowing the true beauty of these pumpkins and gourds to shine. Along with the pumpkins straight from the farm, the setting includes super-tall, elegant taper candles — elegant and rustic elements — my favorite combination. A centerpiece made of pumpkins, squash and gourds versus a formal floral design says all of the right things about my party.

As the harvest season is all about the celebration of bounty, I wanted the table to feel full and plentiful. With so many colors and shapes to choose from, it is easy to get overwhelmed and end up with a hodgepodge result. I recommend that you pick 2 or 3 complementary colors to avoid making the table setting too busy. I selected gourds that were all muted in color – pale butternut, green-blues and creamy white, then added pops of red-orange for contrast.

What You’ll Need:
  • Linen runner:  I love how wide this runner is.  In my online store, I carry several extra wide and extra long runners.  If you don’t have one, you can use a piece of burlap or brown kraft paper, or create a runner out of a drapery panel folded in half, like I did.
  • 2 or 3 medium blue pumpkins: If you are seating 6, place 2 medium pumpkins down the middle of the table, placing them in the gaps between the place settings. If you are serving 8, use 3 pumpkins, placing them in the space between the place settings.
  • 8 to 10 small gourds and squash: Use a variety of sizes, shapes and colors (sticking to your coordinated palette), and lay them evenly down the center of the table in groups of 3 or 4.
  • 2 branches (I used pear berry branches): Weave branches in through the pumpkins and gourds, creating a natural flow down the table. The branches help to visually pull all the elements together, creating a cohesive look.
  • 6 mini pumpkins: Create candle holders by coring out the center of mini pumpkins. This is an inexpensive way to make candle holders if you don’t own any. For step-by-step instructions, visit the“How to Create a Mini Pumpkin Candle Holder” post.
  • 6 taper candles: I used ivory, but an Edgartown Sand would be perfect would look great with this, too.
  • 6 white pantry plates: I like to use solid white plates when I am using a large variety of colors on the table. The white helps to ground the table and provides some much-needed simplicity to the bountiful centerpiece.
  • 6  linen napkins: Let the centerpiece be the center of attention. These hemstitched linen napkins are luxurious, but in a subtle classic way.

Harvest Party Menu
Not only should your table reflect the bounty of the season, but your menu should, too. When you’re at the farmers’ market selecting your centerpiece pumpkins, ask around for great recipes that utilize the season’s best. The menu I’ve compiled below is a balance of indulgent, fresh and flavorful seasonal recipes.

Tips for Hosting a Great Dinner Party

Entertaining your friends for dinner can seem more challenging than it needs to be. With these helpful tips, you’ll be able to host a fall harvest dinner party with ease … and have a great time, too!

Make the House Buzz
Have you ever been the first to arrive at a party? If the house is quiet and the lights are bright, it doesn’t quite feel like a party. I like to have the lights low, candles lit, fun music going and a “help yourself” cocktail station ready to go 30 minutes before the party begins. Getting everything set out early allows me to wind down before anyone arrives and gives me a chance to feel like a guest at my own party. There is nothing worse than arriving when the hostess is frantically dusting the mantle and juggling pots and pans in the kitchen.

Cocktails, Then Wine
I like to start a party off with a fun festive drink for cocktail hour, then serve wine at dinner. I hardly ever offer a full bar to my guests – it is too much to put together for a small gathering. If you offer someone a tasty seasonal drink when they walk in the door, it gives you another opportunity to set the mood for the evening. For the harvest party, I recommend serving Spiked Mulled Cider and a local Pumpkin Beer to kick off the night.

Leave the Dishes!
After dinner, so many times my guests offer to help with the dishes … no way! No one really wants to do dishes, not even me. I encourage my guests to leave their plates right where they are — “don’t worry about the dishes, let’s have dessert!” — and we all move into the most comfortable room in the house (perhaps around a fire). I like to pre-set this chosen, comfortable area with coffee or an after-dinner cocktail and dessert.

If I want the evening to last forever, I’ll put out a big tray that is full of chocolate-covered fruit, cookies, candies and caramels that can be continuously nibbled on as the evening goes late into the night. This open-ended dessert invites guests to get comfortable and help themselves. Easy conversation and stories are certain to follow.

Press : Country Living Magazine | Our Dining Room

Press : Country Living Magazine | Our Dining Room

I love real magazines.  In fact, while the rest of the world relies on blogs, pinterest and insta for inspiration, I still love magazines.  Every weekend I get up early, make a cup of coffee and go outside to read a stack of magazines all by myself.  For me, it is a source of inspiration and a feel-good routine that can't be replaced by an ipad.  It may seem a little strange for me to say this because, I am after all, a blogger... most of the time ; )

This month, you'll find my dining room featured in Country Living Magazine.  They selected 50 rooms across the country and mine is found under "Kansas."

Here is a link to the article.

Did you notice a new blue and white napkin in the photo above?  They will be a part of a new collection in just a couple of weeks.  Be sure to signup for my newsletter emails to be updated when new products are added or restocked.

Here is a link to more details and photos of this table setting.  It was part of the spring collection with these fabulous block print tablecloths. Please send me an email if you would like to special order this lilac table cloth.  I have similar versions in stock right now that are part of my current Linen Collection.

This "Cherry Pickin'" article inspired my post on Easy Petite Cherry Pies (photo above).

I love these hand pies.  They are the next thing on my to-make list... sweet and savory.

Cottage Hill Magazine | Thanksgiving Table featuring my Candles

Featured in Cottage Hill

A couple of weeks ago Kaitlin from Cottage Hill Magazine contacted me about using some of my Hand Dipped Taper Candles and Wooden Holders for an upcoming table setting for Thanksgiving.  I'm blown away with what they came up with.  They mixed unexpected plums, berry colors and deep pinks, with neutrals like my Falmouth Grey and Lexington Wheat Taper Candles.

Enjoy some screen shots of the table they created - head over to Cottage Hill to see the rest... including a delicious looking cinnamon apple cocktail in a copper mug!

Look at that floral!

Kentucky Derby Style | Sugar & Charm | J.Crew

I'm often asked to participate on other blogs.  I don't always have the time to do them, but for some reason this "ask" seemed really fun... dream shopping.  Eden from Sugar & Charm asked me to select my dream outfit for a Kentucky Derby party.

I have a fairly distinct (eh, minimal?) style.  I'm very particular about what I purchase and wear... although if you looked at my closet it might seem quite boring!  Lots of basics.  Lots of solids.  Lots of oxfords, cardigans, cropped pants and ballet flats.

I'm a self proclaimed J.Crew monster.  I know my size, I know what I like - and it always seems like they have it... with some added character pieces to spice things up.  So, suuur-prize sur-prise, my entire "dream outfit" is from J.Crew.  While I can (and do) spend hours dreaming about my "future" multiple multimillion dollar homes, for some reason I can only dream in beautiful J.Crew basics when it comes to my wardrobe.

As you can see, along with the outfit- the gold rimmed julep glasses with the "H" monogram would be a must... and banana cupcakes.

Here is a link to the feature on Sugar & Charm - it has links to all of the items.  Enjoy!

My Stress-Free Holiday Entertaining Tips on MyWell-Being.com

As most of you know, I write a monthly blog for MyWell-Being.com, a site that serves as a "guide to getting started on the path to complete well-being in every aspect of your life—health and money, people and play."  On their site they explain Well-Being as :
Well-being. It’s about so much more than simply being well.
While your health—physical and mental—is a big part of your well-being, it’s only one piece of a much bigger picture.
Think about the sense of contentment you get from feeling close and connected to family, friends, and your broader community. That’s well-being.
And remember how good it feels to be financially confident? When your career’s in good shape and you’re on top of your savings—that’s well-being, too.
And let’s not forget the lift you get from the time you spend at play, traveling the world, or exploring new—and old—interests. Well-being, again.
Isn't that great?  Their philosophy of "well-being" is very much in line with my beliefs of "living well" on a daily basis and what I try to inspire you, my readers, to do through entertaining friends and family, creating a warm home or traveling to a relaxing destination.

This month, my MyWell-Being.com post is all about Stress-Free Entertaining for the Holidays.  Here is a small excerpt.  You can read the rest at MyWell-Being.com :
At the beginning of each Holiday season, many of us make the resolution to spend less, rush around less, stress less and give more.  However, even with our good intentions, there are still Holiday dinners to be prepared, gifts to be purchased and parties to attend that seem to fill up our month of joyful celebrations with a list endless obligations.  Even now, as I write this I'm feeling very behind on my own Holiday checklist!
One way to make our Holiday "to-do's" less stressful is to simplify our Holiday Entertaining.  Hosting the perfect family dinner or festive cocktail party this time of year can sometimes seem like a big burden.  Too often, we feel like our homes have to look perfect and the food has to be expensive and elaborate so we can impress our friends and family.  With these high expectations come a lot of stress and not a whole lot of fun...
