Thanksgiving Countdown Day 2 | Table Inspiration + 30% Off Linens

The Thanksgiving Countdown Continues.  Day 2 is all about The Table - the fun part.  Today is the day to decide what linens you'll use (if you have enough, if not, see my tips below), the candles, and the centerpiece.  Of course, the flower shopping won't start until next week, but having a good idea of the plan today will save you from running around next week.

Really, besides making sure your home is cozy and comfortable, setting the table really is the centerpiece for the Thanksgiving (and the food).  I have created seven individual schemes based on Napkins and Table Linens I have available.  By combining a print with a velvet ribbon, coordinating candle and little sprig of this or that, each scheme is the essence season.  I've included some ideas for making your table feel extra cozy, too, like adding a velvet cushion in a seat or a warm plaid throw over a chair.
To help you get ready for Thanksgiving and the upcoming holiday season, we're having a 30% off Linen Sale today.  Yes, that even includes the new Holiday linens we introduced last week.  Hurry!

Bring the pumpkins in from the front porch (they're getting ready to freeze!) and put them on display for your table.  I love these soft orange pumpkins mixed with the soft finish of the pewter.

6" Maize Candles

Mix & Match Silverware

Lately I've kept my eye out for silver plate flatware at estate sales and 'treasure shops' as Emma and I call them.  I mix and match them with our own silver from our wedding.  I don't mind that it is a little tarnished (I never polish!) and everything goes through the dishwasher in our house.  Mixing my collections helps me expand my sets for the entire table.  For example at one setting, I'll use the forks from one collection and the knives from another.  In the next seat, I'll use the knives from one and the forks from the other.  They go together, but they don't match exactly.

I do the same with napkins & plates.  If I only have so many matching plates, I'll mix in white plates every other seat, and use the coordinating salad plates on top of the white plate, then matching pattern salad plate on top of the white dinner plate.  It stretches the collections.

And definitely mix and match chairs.  These new windsor chairs were a steal at a local antique shop.  They match our table perfectly in a dark cherry wood.

I love adding a sprig of something to a setting.  They aren't too bulky and they smell delish.

A thyme sprig above.  Rosemary below.  Both perfectly Thanksgiving.

I added a little hand-stitched H to these Hemstitched Napkins (says that two times fast...) to make these coordinate with my Green Hydrangea Table Linens.  I alternated each seat with a block print napkin, and a hemstitch napkin - see above.  Again, stretching each collection of 4.

Easy Weekend Brunch Menu | Apple Cinnamon Scones, Lox & Bagels, Bacon & Potato Frittata

Over the holiday weekend, we hosted a little brunch for our neighbors - a couple and their baby we love spending time with.  They love to cook and entertain too, so we usually swap every other gathering at each of our houses.  They kicked off the summer with a brunch over Memorial Day weekend, so this time we were happy to host.

There are a lot of make-ahead tips for entertaining out there, which are great, but the only trouble is that you have to have the time/energy/planning skills to actually make them ahead of time : )  Our weekend was jam packed, but I still wanted to have them over for brunch, so instead of make-ahead options (breakfast strata, overnight french toast, etc.) I opted for make-in-no-time options.

I did the shopping that morning at 8:30, started cooking at 9 and have everything ready by 9:45.  Why do we always make entertaining so hard on ourselves?!   It was so nice to be relaxed and leisurely while getting everything ready.   Mike and Emma even had time to cut some flowers (weeds?) for the table.  I can't remember the name of this stuff (Sweet August something...?) but it smells fabulous.

Here was our menu (recipes follow) :

For a little (big) bite when they arrived, I served these Apple Cinnamon Scones with a Maple & Vanilla Bean glaze warm out of the oven with coffee.  I topped them with a sprinkle of cinnamon and orange zest to make them smell (and look) amazing.

When we go out to brunch, this is always my go to - especially in the summer.  It was the perfect option for this party because all I had to do was assemble it.

Instead of the soak over night and bake in the morning Breakfast Strata, I made a really quick and easy Bacon and Potato frittata that I baked in the oven and topped with white cheddar and chives.

2 cups plus 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of orange zest
12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, diced
2 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup cold heavy cream
1 cup diced apples

2 teaspoons of melted butter
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste

In a mixer, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, orange zest and salt using the paddle attachment.  Cut the cold butter into 1/2 inch pieces.  Add the butter to the dry ingredients and mix on low until the butter is mixed in and is the size of peas.  In a separate bowl, mix together eggs and whipping cream with a fork.  Turn the mixer on low and slowly add the cream and egg mixture.  Turn off the mixer once added.  Fold in apples.

Put some flour on the counter.  Turn the dough out onto the floured surface.  Add some flour onto the top of the dough, then pat it out into a disk - about 8-9 inches in diameter.  Cut the disk into 8 pieces like a pie.

Separate the pieces and put them on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Keep them in the fridge until ready to bake.  Bake at 400 degrees for 13-15 minutes.

To make the glaze, stir together melted butter, powdered sugar, maple syrup and vanilla.  Add a small splash of milk or powdered sugar to make it the consistency you like.

I cut the apples pretty small so they would get tender while baking.

My helper, the professional egg cracker.

Sweet baby hands adding apples.

Patted into a disk.

While they baked, I stirred together the glaze.

I like to make it a little thick, because it runs all over the warm scones when you pour it on - a good thing.

Topped with a little orange zest and cinnamon to make them smell like apple pie!

Spying on my flower pickers.

The Mr.

Barefoot!  She is really starting to take more control over her outfit choices... for instance, this is her Easter dress.  I would've rather her wear one of her summer dresses, but she insisted on Easter : )  I'll enjoy her little toddler closet for now filled with sweet dresses that I picked out... I have a feeling it is not going to last much longer!  As my mom will remind me, my favorite colors were decidedly "Hot Pink and Neon Green" from the age of 4-7... and I wouldn't leave the house without wearing a skirt or a dress.

Bagel & Lox Platter
for 4

2 Sesame or Plain Bagels, sliced
6 oz. Cream Cheese, room temp
6 oz. Smoked Salmon or Lox*
Capers
Cherry Tomatoes
Chives

*I know that smoked salmon and lox aren't exactly the same thing, but they are similar enough for this - just use what you can find.  Make sure it is sliced very thin.

If you are organized, you can assemble this the night before... or right before, like I did.  You can also toast the bagel slices... which I also did.

This was a big hit - something most of us just order in restaurants, but is so easy to serve/assemble at home.

This was a recipe that I posted 2-3 years ago when we lived in Concord.  I haven't made it since, but remembered it being delicious - and easy.   And it was.  They guys loved it because it was full of potatoes and bacon!  Here is the original recipe link.

Bacon & Potato Frittata
with White Cheddar & Chives

serves 4-5

6 strips of bacon, diced
2 yukon gold or red potatoes, diced
2 tablespoons of butter
10 eggs
1/4 cup of milk
sea salt & cracked pepper
2 tablespoons of fresh chives, chopped
1/4 cup of cheddar cheese, shredded

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a skillet, cook diced bacon, butter & potatoes for 4-5 minutes until bacon renders the fat and the potatoes begin to soften.  In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, chives, salt and pepper.  Add eggs to the skillet and put in oven to bake for 15 minutes, or until eggs are cooked through.  Top with cheddar cheese and chives.  Serve in wedges.

Here are some pics of Emma doting over Baby G.

Trying to tickle him.

Nap time!

A wonderful and relaxing end to a long weekend and the official end of summer.  Hope you all had a great holiday weekend and are enjoying this short week that is flying by.  Can it really already be Thursday?

Fall-ish Table Setting | DIY Coral & Peach Roses with Privet Berries | Provence Beige Linens

Setting a pretty table is so much fun.  During Summer months our entertaining is very casual and usually takes on the form of very simple table settings... or none at all.  As Fall rolls in I'm getting excited for more cozy dinner parties leading into full on entertaining during the Holiday season.

I'll walk you through the elements I used to create this table below.  While this is pretty fancy for a typical dinner, just using one or two elements for your table would be a great way to recreate the look at your home without being over the top.

As always, creating the very simple DIY flower arrangements is my favorite part.  So many get intimidated by creating florals, but it really is fun so simple.  I'll take you through step-by-step at the end of the post.
The candles are really what make this setting so special - they instantly upgrade your table.  They are 18" and come in the five colors below plus ivory, not pictured.  For $15/pair, they are an inexpensive way to make a big impact.  I have them on my bare table right now and even on an empty table they look special.

Shop 18" Very Tall Tapers, here.

I used the Falmouth Grey on this table.

I use the Provence Beige Linen Tablecloth with the Tuscany Napkins for a bit of a mix and match look.  They colors are the same, just the patterns of the stripes are swapped.

I always order 54" square tablecloths because I like to see some of the wood peaking through.  If you have a longer table, it will be help bring the eye to the center of the table.  It also works perfectly on round tables.  I just love how versatile the size is.  I'll be using them this weekend for my brother's engagement party... stay tuned next week for lots and lots of photos of that!
I used the Oak Tree Folded Cards for place cards at each setting.  I love doing this for even small parties.  Each person feels special, and it helps to make sure that everyone is seated by someone that they'll enjoy.

This is the first version of  the arrangements that I made - only with the peach spray roses.  After setting the table, I decided that it looked a little too sweet for a fall setting and added the orange roses, too, to make it feel a little more fall-ish.

I made them in my favorite "vases" the Fleur de Lys Tumblers that I also used as water glasses at the table.  They are the perfect size shape for a small grouping of flowers.

You can find very pretty spray roses at Trader Joe's or your grocery store.  Both of these colors are fairly standard.  They do a great job of opening up, too.

I started by trimming each the privet berries into little sprigs and put them around the base of the glass to create a "collar."

Then, I trimmed the roses to be just taller than the berries and put them in groupings in the middle.

Too easy, right?  But very pretty.  I love this type of arrangement for the table because it is not too structured or overly fancy, and they are low enough to easily talk over during dinner.
I also made orange versions, which I eventually mixed together with the peach to give more of a fall-ish look.   This would also be a great arrangement to do with mums later in the season.
