This is a favorite ribbon from last year that I just got my ands on for this year - Copper Satin ribbon.

I have always loved warm, natural colors at Christmas time - probably inspired by Martha Stewart at some point.  In fact, I'm sure of it.  I can remember some wreaths and gifts she's wrapped in this luscious, rich color.  It looks especially handsome with a sprig of fresh greens or pretty holiday tag : )

Provencal Beef Stew with Homemade Pasta Shapes


When we were putting up the Christmas tree Emma was itching to use her new mini cookie cutters, but with the tree project already in full swing, sugar cookies were not a possibility.  However, I did have this Provencal Beef Stew simmering on the stove and was planning to make homemade Pappardelle pasta to go along with it.  The cookie cutters were laying about on the area that I was rolling out the pasta and I had a light bulb moment.  



I don't know about you, but when I saw the beef stew on Tessa's instagram, I couldn't get it out of my head : )  It is similar to my Tuscan Beef & Vegetable Stew, but a little simpler and a bit more stew-like vs. soup.  It is a new favorite of our family's.



I think the shapes turned out so cute that I had to share it here.  It would be darling for a cozy Christmas dinner - especially if there are children around.  Emma was more than happy to fish out her shapes and slurp up the stew.  The pasta can be pre-made and the stew is put together earlier in the day, simmers and makes your house smell so yummy - a perfect scent to greet your Christmas guests.


The pasta is very simple to make.  You can follow my directions here from a past post.  Typically, we serve it with homemade beef ragu, but it was so delicious with this flavorful beef provencal soup.




The pasta cooks in just 1-2 minutes since it is fresh.




I can't get enough of cozy candlelit dinners this time of year.  We will definitely making this again very soon.

Cinnamon Rolls from Frozen Bread Dough | Rhodes Bread Dough | Holiday Brunch


We'll be making these for our holiday gifts this year.  But instead of baking them in a regular pan, I'm baking them in my wooden baking baskets - perfect for gifting.




  
"Homemade" Cinnamon Rolls
from frozen bread dough

There is nothing quite like homemade cinnamon rolls.  My mom is famous for her homemade cinnamon rolls - she makes the dough from scratch and tops them with cream cheese icing (recipe here).  For those of us that don't have the patience (or time) to make homemade dough like my Mom, I have a great shortcut for you : frozen bread dough.

Frozen bread dough and I go back a long time.  At our first "supper club" back in 2006 (?) I made "homemade" bread from frozen bread dough.  The guys (including my future husband, who I hadn't started dating yet...) went crazy.  They said they had never tasted anything so amazing - it was soft, moist, light, chewy... they went on and on.  Mike still talks about that bread to this day - maybe that was what attracted him to me! Sadly, I don't think I've ever made it for him since that night - oops!  Guess I'll have to put that on our list.  His birthday is coming up!

The point to that story (sorry...) is that I believe the appeal of "homemade" bread is not the fact that it is made "at home," but that it is fresh baked.  I use that very same frozen bread dough to make cinnamon rolls that taste, look and smell just like homemade dough - but the hard part is already done for me!  All I have to do is thaw the dough, roll it out, butter cinnamon and sugar, rise & bake.  It really takes no time at all - it just has to be done the night before to allow for the rolls to rise. So, whether you want to call them "Homemade" or "Fresh Baked" Cinnamon Rolls - they will definitely be a "Keeper" recipe, I'm sure!

"Homemade" Cinnamon Rolls

from frozen bread dough
, makes 24 large rolls


3 loaves of frozen bread dough, thawed (it comes 3 to a bag)
8 tablespoons of butter, softened
1 1/2 cup of brown sugar
4 tablespoons of cinnamon
butter icing glaze (recipe below)

Thaw three loaves of frozen bread dough in the refrigerator or on the counter (there are directions for thawing on the bag).  Allow the thaw dough to rise for 1-2 hours in a warm area covered with a damp cloth.  Roll the dough out into a rectangle onto a floured surface.  Spread softened butter on the rolled out dough.  Sprinkle sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon over the dough.  Roll up the dough into a log.  Slice into 2-inch thick rolls.  Place into a buttered pan, or one lined with parchment paper.

Cover with a warm damp towel and allow to rise 1-2 hours in a warm area.  If you are preparing the night before and baking in the morning, keep them in the refrigerator and let them rise about 1 hour before baking.  When the rolls have doubled in size, bake them at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes until they begin to brown.  Top with Butter Icing Glaze.


Butter Icing Glaze
for cinnamon rolls

2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of milk
powdered sugar

Melt butter with milk in the microwave for 30 seconds.  Add powdered sugar until the glaze is the right consistancy - it should pour, but not be runny.  The heat from the cinnamon rolls will help the glaze to melt over them easily.  


 

Rhodes frozen bread dough can be found everywhere.  There are 3 loafs in each package.


I made a large batch and used all three loafs.  This is what they'll look like when they've risen.


I rolled them out 1 at a time.   This has the butter and sugar on it.


Now the brown sugar.


And the cinnamon.  Then roll up the dough into one long roll.


Your roll can be longer or shorter - it doesn't really matter.


I made different sized batches in different pans.  I plan to bake them and put them in the freezer for various occasions.  This one has 5 large rolls.


I like how to rolls bake in muffin pans - they are very pretty and more individual.


This is what the rolls look like when they have risen overnight - doubled in size.

Above: Here is the beginning of the table setting for Mike's birthday.  I always talk about how I like to keep a "living" centerpiece on our table at most times - something that doesn't die and something that will look great for a couple of weeks.  Sometimes it is a bowl of oranges, sometimes it is potted herbs or paperwhites.  This time, it is fresh greens (magnolia and cedar) that I put in water tubes (thanks to the idea from Tessa, nineandsixteen).  The water tubes not only help to keep the greens fresh, but they help form the greens into bundles that I arranged down the table (step-by-step and more setting details to come).

Speaking of Tessa, she recently messaged me about trying to hunt down a taper candle color from an inspiration photo that was brownish, but not too dark, with undertones of richness, but not too red.  It turns out that my candle maker (creative candles) had recently added a new color, Chestnut, that was a perfect fit.  Since Tessa has such great taste and every time she recommends one of my products it quickly become a best seller, I went ahead and ordered Chestnut for the store (in limited quantity), too.  It comes in two heights, traditional 12" and Tessa's favorite 18".   I have it featured in the design board below, along with my seasonal favorite neutral, Lexington Wheat, that I used in the table above.

I created this board from what is happening in our home right now.  Emma and I have had a lot of fun creating homemade touches and adding natural flourishes here and there.  This palette feel so cozy and seasonal for me, even though it is not brimming with reds.  It is more natural and neutral feeling and perfect for transitioning from Mike's birthday to Christmas.   I love the suede like brown on the magnolia leaves with the deep green and soft slate color.  It inspired the gift wrap for Mike's presents and his breakfast in bed tray (below).

I just love how the brown transferware looks with the slate wreath print.  It feels a little collected and a little layered and modern at the same time.  As you can see, I found another use for those horizontal print tea towels ; )


This is board reflects more of how the kitchen side of our home feels like.  It is more fresh, but still cozy and seasonal with lots of wreaths and fresh greens.  I love this neutral palette of creams, beige and browns that is freshened up with cedar.   I put my paperwhites in a big brown & white transferware bowl this year and I love how it looks... now just hoping they sprout up and bloom in the next couple of weeks.  Emma and I created the simple pinecone garland by stringing them on a velvet ribbon.  The velvet sort of gripped the pinecones to help them stick - we literally just stuck the ribbon between the little wooden petals of the pinecone and they stayed.  I think it looks so charming.

Christmas at Our House | Photo Tour



This may be the longest post in the history of my blog.  There are many, many photos.  I hope you don't mind too much : )

Most of our decorating is finished, but I'm sure I'll continue to add more touches here and there over the next couple of weeks.  We are hosting a couple of get togethers this week and next, so I'm sure I'll add some fresh florals and homemade goodies, too.

On our tour, you'll find fresh greens, a fraser fir tree and garland, a juniper wreath in our dining room (my newest favorite), magnolia leaves and incense cedar sprigs, along with soft pops of red in pillows, winter berries, linens and ribbons.

I have truly enjoyed decking our house with holiday cheer.  I made an attempt not to exhaust myself of it - but there is no getting around it.  Though I'm loving sitting at my computer right now basking in the glow of twinkling lights, enjoying the woodland scent of our fresh greens, and cushioned by many cozy holiday pillows, I will admit - it did wear me out a bit.  I'm sure half of you are exhausted from decorating every mantle and bannister in sight, and you can't help but wonder, is it worth it?  Why do we go to so much trouble?

All of you who are also sitting amongst your twinkling lights already know the answer - yes.  There is something magical we create when we transform our house.  It makes those moments you spend at home even more special this time of year.  When our homes are brimming with Christmas cheer, we find ourselves relaxing on the sofa that no one sits on to admire the tree at night, or spending an evening in front of the fire with our feet up, or coming downstairs early in the morning before anyone else gets up just to enjoy the stillness of a quiet morning and sparkle of the lights as the sun comes up.

I hope you all take the time to sit back and enjoy the splendor of what you've created in your homes, and take in the faces of your family and friends as they experience it with joy.   It is most definitely worth it.

This is my newest big find - a runner for the kitchen.  (I probably talked about it in our Thanksgiving photos, but I can't remember... Christmas decorating brain!)  I really love how it warms up the entire room and is so soft underfoot.
