Recipes | Granny's Homemade Donuts & Real Cappuccino | Breakfast | Brunch

When we spent the night at "Granny's" house, she always made these "biscuit donuts" in the morning.  As she stood at the frying pan turning out dozens of donuts, we had a great time topping them with cinnamon and sugar, an icing glaze, or even just powdered sugar.  They were always so delicious, and guess what?  They still are.

Topping (two choices):

Cinnamon & Sugar
1/2 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of cinnamon

Combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

Icing Glaze
4 tablespoons of butter
1 cup of powdered sugar
1 tablespoon of milk

In a small bowl, melt the butter in the microwave.  With a fork or small whisk, stir in the powdered sugar and milk.  Add more powdered sugar or milk to make it the right consistency, if necessary.

Homemade Donuts

2 cans of biscuits (the small, inexpensive biscuits, not the big flakey)
1 cup of vegetable oil

Start by making the topping, because once you fry the donuts, they'll be ready in seconds!

In a skillet, heat the oil on medium heat for 3-5 minutes.  Tear a hole in the middle of each biscuit, creating a hole the size of a nickel.  Put the biscuit in the oil and fry for 10-20 seconds on each side.  Remove from the  oil and put on a paper towel to drain oil.  Place the donut in cinnamon and sugar or icing glaze while they're still hot.  Serve immediately!

The donuts are best served with an authentic Italian cappuccino... something we got addicted to on our honeymoon in Italy.  We were convinced that we needed a major machine to make it at home, but while we were staying at a bed and breakfast in the Tuscany countryside they served us fabulous espresso in this simple espresso kettle.   It completes a great breakfast.

  1. Oh, wish I had seen this before I went to the grocery! On my to make lust soon.

  2. Unfortunately biscuit cans are a thing in the USA... :( I discovered those when I was leaving in the USA, never seen it in Australia and now I am in London and there is no such thing either. Not that I do not mind making donuts from scratch, but those fried biscuits were a little treat... so easy & so quick to make!

I made these this morning and absolutely loved them! So easy and cheap to make! You can't beat them.
